leaving home

This is my 6,626th blog post. I've been blogging here since May 2001. But Google has finally managed to de-feature Blogger to the point where I have to move.

So I did.

My first post on my new WordPress blog is the sky gods are puzzled – Ottawa urban planning (built form).

I will shortly move I moved the FeedBurner RSS feed to the new blog.
If you want to follow it, it's

Thanks for reading me here. Hope to hear from you on WordPress.

Bye Blogger.

UPDATE 2012-02-09: Kudos to Reblogger for providing a reliable commenting platform for my blog since 2003 (or maybe even earlier).  However, now that the new blog is live, I'm shutting down comments here on the old blog.

meta: invoking ancient magic

Updated my very very old Blogger template to show post titles on individual post pages.

On the miniscule chance you should need to do this, it's a combination of itempage, blogger, and the page title:

[title][$BlogTitle$][itempage]: [Blogger][$BlogItemTitle$][/Blogger][/itempage][/title]

(I've changed angled brackets to square, as the Blogger editor is now too clueless to let me easily quote HTML code.)

meta 2: template annihilation

In saving a two-line change to my ancient blog template, Google appears to have annihilated it and replaced it with a Google-approved generic button-filled Google-service-plastered generic template.

If this is really the case, I am angry.

UPDATE: I was able to restore my old template, I had to do Update Template and then Revert to Classic Template.

meta: cleanup

I guess I can remove the MyYahoo and Bloglines links from my sidebar, what with both of them basically no longer existing.  Hard when your blog outlives the services it used to use.  (And kudos to jsoft.ca whose commenting service for my blog has continued to run, year after year.)

Also renewing my radio station, in case anyone wants to listen (it's all recorded music, it's not live radio).

bookmarks

Over the years I've tried Blogmarks and Blinklist for dedicated bookmarks to support this site, but both stopped working properly after a while. Have now decided to just use a dedicated tag in delicious.

meta: tech in progress

I'm going to be using my blog more for tech-in-progress notes, it's something I used to do but I got out of the habit.

Detailed reviews will still be in my reviews blog, not here.

format

I think it's the long URL in the twitter stream that's made my format go all wonky.

meta: win awards

From Mirsky's Worst of the Web to Ottawa Rant of the Day.

What a long strange journey it's been.

I really should stop swearing in my blog, it's a relatively new thing, I don't know why I'm so fired up.

I also should keep reminding myself that more than like 5 people read this blog, at least on occasion.

yesterday's final tally, and San Diego 2007 and 2003

So more like 80-fold increase in hits over normal.

In case you're wondering, they're all doing this MSN/Live search, and picking the third image, a 2003 NASA satellite view of the fires, which (in the search results) points to the image link in the old Dal version of this blog.

Here's a link to the 2007 equivalent, maybe it will get me hits when there's a fire again in 2011.

[2007 california wildfires]

from http://www.nasa.gov/vision/earth/lookingatearth/socal_wildfires_oct07.html

I don't think I ever wrote up my pithy statements on arriving in San Diego when it was on fire in 2003, so here you go:

We were delayed in Denver due to the fires. As we were finally flying in, there was a line of fire across the mountains. There was a smoke plume we flew into, I assumed we were going to fly out of it, but we never did, we just descended into smoke. You could smell the smoke in the plane in flight, which was kind of freaky. When we landed, I could see ash blowing around on the tarmac. When we stepped outside the airport, instead of the clear blue San Diego sunshine, the sky was grey and the sun literally was a red orb in the sky. It was like arriving in Mordor. My mother described it as "like being inside of an ashtray". We were staying at a lovely resort, but the roses were all covered with ash, and the swimming pool had a floating layer of ash covering its surface.

I've added a twitter sidebar since that's mostly where I'm posting stuff these days.

in which I try to unbreak things

My poor neglected blog had various things that were still broken from the move to Blogspot, or links that went to dead sites. This is what you get when you start blogging in 2001. I am actually amazed at how much stuff still works.

I've fixed the contact link, which went nowhere, unfortunately I can't fix the Dal site link, which gives an email address I can no longer access. I bet there's a lot of spam there by now...

Some of the blogs I link in my blogroll have stopped blogging, but I've left them for historical purposes (this means you, Cameron).

what happens when old images meet new event

My traffic is up about 40-fold (so far) today, I just hope people realise that the satellite images they're getting are from the 2003 fires. I'm actually amazed that the image links all still work, four years later.

Unfortunately I think they're mostly hitting my old Dal site, where I can't change any of the posts because I don't have a password any more.

fixing numeric links

At some point the behavior changed, I used to have to add #<$BlogItemNumber$> but now it appears to be built-in to the archive link.

I've activated the new "Post Feed Redirect URL" feature for my existing MM FeedBurner feed, so err, if you're using your feed reader and you can't read this, please let me know.

test 6 - in which blogger uses confusing terminology

testing 6 - Blogger has some terrible examples for post permalinks.

All their examples are for the "Link" field, which makes no sense.
So don't use <$BlogItemURL$> and ignore any examples about it.
Just use <$BlogItemPermalinkURL$> instead.

Info from Google Groups - Blogger Customizing Templates.

in which I mess up my blog

I'm going to attempt to convert my blog to post-based, rather than number-indexed.
This will probably cause a galactic meltdown in the format, assuming it does doesn't destroy it utterly.

Flickr stats

I wonder when I joined Flickr. There's probably some way to check.

Anyhoo... 850 photos / 20,182 views

850 photos is really quite a lot.

I just noticed Blogger has a new "Add Video" button - "We accept AVI, MPEG, QuickTime, Real, and Windows Media, 100 MB maximum size."
