how popular is Battlestar Galactica??
Um, not very.
About 1.5 million people (according to Nielsen) watch, down from a high of about 2.5 million people.
At least as measured by Nielsen ratings, which like many numbers taken as gospel in our financial system, is a dubious measure at best.
Anyway. A ratings point = about 1 million Americans.
BG ranged around 2 points = 2 million viewers according to Nielsen, last year
the ratings are supposedly substantially down this year
for comparison, Nielsen is showing cable's SpongeBob SquarePants at a rating of 2.5 this week
and the top show on broadcast tv this week was Desperate Housewives, with a rating of 13.5
on the plus side, even today's top shows have much, much lower ratings than when everyone used to watch the same shows on tv
on the down side, 2.0 or less is a very, very low rating
Battlestar doesn't even make it into the top 100 TV shows
the lowest rated show, #100, is Smallville, with a rating of 3.1
(Gilmour Girls is #99, with a rating of 3.3)
In case you're wondering, Lost has a rating of 10.0
"The season 3 premiere of the Sci Fi Channel critical favorite and recent recipient of a Peabody Award, premiered last week with a 1.8 rating (1.0 Age 18-49). That’s a shade under 2.2M viewers (2.16M).
That pales in comparison to the show’s second season premiere back in July of 2005 (3.05M viewers), but is on par with where the series left off back in September of last year (about 2.1M viewers).
Though 2.2M is not terrible for a Sci Fi channel show, when you factor in all of the great press and media exposure the series has recieved as of late by fans and critical press alike, a stronger showing was expected."
"Collaborators (BG 3.05) was the third in a row to set a new low for Battlestar Galactica ratings. It's earned a 1.4 Nielsen rating after the two parts of "Exodus" earned 1.6 and 1.5, respectively."
